Counselling for

Low Self-Esteem

With low self-esteem, we don’t value our own opinions, needs, and ideas as much as those of other people. We’re self-critical and focus on our perceived weaknesses and flaws. Low self-esteem impacts every facet of our lives - we can help you shift the way you view yourself.

Healthy self-esteem is learned. Positive reinforcement during the developing years is the strongest marker for positive self-worth later on in life. Although self-esteem can be affected by adult life experiences, it’s largely determined through childhood interactions with people closest to us, whose opinion matters most, such as our parents, siblings, friends, and teachers. There are many causes for low self-esteem, including neglectful, abusive, controlling, or judgmental parenting, bullying by peers, or even mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression.

Signs of low self-esteem include:

  • You constantly compare yourself to others

  • You feel like somehow you are not worthy of friendship, love, or acceptance

  • You feel stupid a lot of the time

  • You are constantly trying to improve yourself or your appearance

  • You seek instant gratification to make yourself feel better
